The weather had been awful all day. The rain just wouldn't make up its mind. One minute it was raining, almost pouring and the next the sun was out as if nothing had ever happened. Just when people would think it was done for the day, the rain would start back up. Still Rebeccca had taken a bus to the park during one of the longer periods of the weather being dry. She now stood in the center of a small crowd with her guitar in her hand and a tip jar at her feet. One of the audience members had requested that she do an oldie but a goodie Joan Jett song so she currently had the crowd very much entertained and interactive.
“He said, "Can I take you home
Where we can be alone?"
Next we're moving on, he was with me, yeah me
And we'll be moving on and singing that same old song, yeah with me”
The crowd picked up at the chorus as Becca focused on hitting all the right notes. This was the second song she had played since getting here and this one was much easier than the first. She had been nervous with the first one like always, but the second she got started, all her nerves relaxed. Becca finished the song and got lots of tips from the smiling crowd. She returned their smiles as they all went on about their day. When the crowd had all left, Becca put her tip jar into her guitar case to count later and sat down on a nearby bench.
Of course, it began to sprinkle, but Rebecca wasn't ready to head home yet. With hope that the rain would subside and without an audience, she started playing a song that she frequently played when she was alone. It seemed like a good time to play it.
“Oh, dear mother, I love you
I'm sorry, I wasn't good enough”
Thoughts of her mother came to her. She had never been as smart as Kylie. She had always been more trouble than Kylie.
“Dear father, forgive me
'Cause in your eyes, I just never added up
In my heart I know I failed you, but you left me here alone”
She always choked up at this part. Her father had left them before her mom had even known she was pregnant with her. Rebecca was the reason her father had abandoned them. The lyrics seemed so fitting.
“If I could hold back the rain, would you numb the pain?
'Cause I remember everything.
If I could help you forget, would you take my regrets?
'Cause I remember everything.”
The rain was coming down a little heavier now, but Rebecca didn't move. She stopped playing, but she didn't even try to get out of the rain. When she heard footsteps and laughter coming in her direction, she swiped at her eyes quickly at the tears that hadn't managed to make it past the corner of her eyes. Whoever was coming was to far away to notice her tears, but they might think she was a bit crazy for sitting there in the rain.
