The weather has been unpredictable lately. Hot one day, cold the next. Beautiful sunshine, terrible storms. Mother nature was really letting the world have it, but today was one of the good days. The sun was out bright and warm, and it just felt like the perfect opportunity to get back out into the world.
Ashley Tyler had decided to take her child out to a local park for a few hours after they had gotten home from school. She stood next to a shade tree, drinking from a bottle of water as she watched her children play. It wasn't long before she heard someone's voice talking to her.

"Good weather for them to enjoy today."
Said her husband as he came up behind her.
"Hope I'm not too late, went for a run to clear my head when you texted."
He smiles and gives her a kiss.'
"So how are they all today?"

“Excited to finally be seeing some spring weather. They have missed getting to play outside so much this winter especially with it being so much colder here in New York than we are used to.”
She turns to face him and wraps her arms around his neck
“I was beginning to think you wouldn't make it. They have been asking about you and if daddy would play with them when he got here.”

He smiled.
"That's one thing I'll never let anything nor anyone do and that's let down my kids."
He watched them play a little as he put his arm around Ashley.
"I know that I've been having to be away more then I've wanted but I promise that today will just be for us, I'm trading shifts with a few guys so today is all for us."
He notices his daughter running towards him as she places a hand on his side.
"Tag your it!" She says as best as she knows how. Chris smiles and looks over at his wife.
"be right back, duty calls."
He takes off running after her as Conner and Adrian join in.

Ashley stands there watching Chris try to tag one of the children, but they are using teamwork to keep their dad off balance and confusing him as to which one he should run after. This causes Ashley to laugh. Ashley walks out from under the shade and waves her hands above her head.
“Over here. Come on. Hurry before he gets you.”
The kids all make a mad dash towards Ashley and get behind her, taking deep breaths. Chris runs over to where they are, but Ashley holds her hands out.
“Nope, I'm home base. That means that they are safe. You can't get...”
She lets out a scream as Chris grabs her and tackles her to the ground.

They all laugh as they lay down on the grass. Chris gives her a kiss and rolls over on his back, with the kids getting back up and taking off. Chris looks over to Ashley.
"Does that mean your "It" now? Or that we're both out?"
He laughs and sits up, watching his children run around.
"So I was thinking, we work together for Dinner tonight and then maybe cuddle up to a movie once the kids go to bed?"

Ashley doesn't get up. She lays back in the grass looking up at the clouds.
“Sounds good. But remember tonight is family night. Board games, video games, and kids pick the movie. It is Camille's week to pick the movie so I'm guessing it will either be Trolls or Moana. If you still have the energy after they pass out from all that fun, we could always do our own movie.”
She looks up at him.
“No promises that I'll make it to the end though.”

"it's okay."
He says.
"It all sounds great, but once they pass out we can have our movie night or an early bed time. Either one works for me, I just want us to spend time together..work has been kicking my butt lately so it will be nice just to be home, sleep in the bed at the same time as you and see the kids for more then a few minutes."

“They miss you and the twins ask where you are all the time. They still don't quite understand why you are gone all the time like Adrian does, but they know that their daddy is a hero and out there helping people who need help.”
She sits up in the grass and hugs her jean clad legs to her chest.
“But you are happy here right? With your job? With everything?”

He gives that question some thought.
"Yeah..I guess so. It's just nonstop, I thought the job would be a normal 9-5 and then home every night for dinner and time with the kids. I know it's important and all, but some days it really weigh on me...and I just want to come home and remind myself why we agreed to live normal lives in New York. I'm happy with what we've accomplished and our lives...but work still gets to me sometimes."
He sighs not wanting her to think he regretted anything. He was the one who said he wanted to be a Cop and he knew what that meant, but it didn't change his emotions or his stress. Somethings he would never get out of his head and it could be very scarring.

“Honestly, if you had wanted the nice and slow life...you probably shouldn't have come to a city with three times as many people as back home and therefore so much more opportunity for crime.”
She looks up at him.
“We could have lived a simple life Chris and I would have been okay with that. Never questioned that decision for a second. But here, you can really make a difference in a lot of people's lives. I think that's why you wanted to move here. Because of the amount of crime and the amount of people who need your help. I'm just saying, I don't want you to regret your decision in the end. I don't want you to regret any part of your life.”

He smiled and placed his hand over his.
"I'll never regret the life I have or the life I've chosen. I knew it wouldn't be easy and if I could make the whole world a good place for our kids I would. It's just when you see the dark side of the world, the dark side of people...it's a weight that I carry..it's a bit of a worry about what our kids may be exposed too. But your right, I took this job because I wanted to help people, it just helps sometimes to talk about it, just promise me if this starts getting the better of me and changing me..you'll let me know right?"

“Oh, I'll be the first one to knock some sense into you. Always.”
She smiles, but her expression quickly gets serious.
“I can't live with someone who regrets a major part of his life, Chris. Someone who is so miserable every single day that it doesn't just affect them but spreads to their family. Someone who can't see the good in front of them because they are so focused on the bad. I already dealt with that with my father, Chris. For years after he lost his job, he was a miserable son of a bitch to live with.”
She looks up at him and then finds their children playing in the distance.
“I won't put them through what I went through.”
She wasn't saying it would happen. She hoped it never did. But she needed him to know that while she would keep an eye out for signs, she couldn't see everything. She couldn't see what he didn't want her to see. She needed him to be self-aware and honest with himself and her about how he was handling everything.

"I know."
He said with a nod.
"And Jackson is a really great partner, he helps keep me straight. But I promise if something does bother me on the job I'll tell you about it. We also have counseling at work for traumatic experiences, hope I won't ever need that but it's there because it's a possible hazard of the job. So one way or another, I'll be okay."
He smiled and gave her a kiss.
"Especially for the kids."

Ashley sat thinking about that for a little bit in silence. She wasn't sure how she would handle it if something did go wrong. If Chris mentally fell apart and heaven forbid started acting like her dad had at the beginning of his downward spiral. She knew the warning signs to look out for and she knew she'd leave the moment that things looked to be heading in that direction. At least temporarily until things were resolved. She wasn't going to become a punching bag for someone she loved ever again. She damn sure wasn't going to stick around to let her kids experience that hell. But she also knew that it would break her heart to walk away.
“Sorry...” she said as she got to her feet. She knew she had spaced out for longer than intended. She immediately began looking around for her kids.
1...
2...
3...
Good. They were still all three on the playground. With the children located, she turned her focus back to the conversation.
“Remind me why did I agree to let you do something so dangerous again?”
She tries to smile.

"I honestly don't know."
He said smiling her way.
"Think my whole "Superhero" obsession got the best of me and gave us both this excited feeling about me being an actual hero. And don't worry baby I have a vest."
He said trying to reassure her.
"And I think we are close to cracking our first major case."

“The Jade one? Are you allowed to talk about it?”
Normally she wouldn't ask, but she knew Jade. They hadn't been friends but she had worked with her and her disappearance was just weird.

She was right, he couldnt really go into details about the case, and he was bad at keeping secrets so it sort of ate at him.
"Yeah you're right, I can't discuss details, but I can say, we're at least not chasing our own tails anymore"
He said that with some confidence.
"I just hope it all works out in the end."

“I hope you find her. Her daughter has seemed pretty upset about it on Twitter. Not that I've been following the case to closely or anything, but it's just weird that it's someone that I actually know.”

"Yeah those are always the hardest cases."
he said with a nod.
"Surprised they let me on it since I knew her, but I'm one of the head detectives and Jackson didn't wanna work it without me. It does hit home though, just hope we find her soon."
